It's not meant to be patronizing; a total lack of interest indicates to me that schooling has managed to crush any departure from uniformity. After years in a school uniform, during which the largest personal self-expression in appearance is that pair of socks you wear, I'm not surprised to see the girls emerge with such a limited horizon.

Look at the choices of the chareidi women: instead of running away screaming, they marry men with no useful skills, support them as the men laze about in kollel, and raise the children to boot. If that's not a form of brainwashing, I don't know what is.
