Well, as long as I'm awake and it's after midnight --

STATUE OF LIBERTY DEDICATED

Here's my personal connection:

Everyone knows I grew up in New York City. In 1986, they were planning a special celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Statue to be held the week leading up to the Fourth of July. We were expecting hundreds of thousands of tourists to descend upon the city, and a New Yorker cartoon pretty much summed it up for those of us living there: "Hey, I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but I'm still going to be out of town on the Fourth."

To this day, I have still never set foot on Liberty Island, let alone been to the top of the Statue.

(Hmmm....1986 was also the year my beloved Mets beat the Red Sox in the World Series...[livejournal.com profile] gnomi, am I allowed to talk about it now?)
[livejournal.com profile] gnomi pointed me to this timeline of Red Sox events from 1920-2004:

And another friend pointed me to this fascinating piece, showing that the Curse may have had (believe it or not) antiSemitic roots:

Yesterday, they did another endoscopy, and the doctor injected epinephrine into the blood vessel that was bleeding, and it stopped bleeding. Mom sounds better this morning, but right now we're in a wait-and-see mode. If her hemoglobin numbers stay good without more transfusions, they won't need to do surgery, and they'll send Mom home next week. If the numbers drop again, they may have to operate.

Either way, I'm heading down to NYC next week, probably on or right after election day. And I'll stay over the weekend, into the following week. My hope is that Mom will be home by the time I head down, so I can help her out while she recovers in the house. If she's still at the hospital, I'll be bouncing back and forth between Queens and Manhattan for a while.
