This Day In History, 1886
Oct. 28th, 2004 12:02 amWell, as long as I'm awake and it's after midnight --
STATUE OF LIBERTY DEDICATED
Here's my personal connection:
Everyone knows I grew up in New York City. In 1986, they were planning a special celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Statue to be held the week leading up to the Fourth of July. We were expecting hundreds of thousands of tourists to descend upon the city, and a New Yorker cartoon pretty much summed it up for those of us living there: "Hey, I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but I'm still going to be out of town on the Fourth."
To this day, I have still never set foot on Liberty Island, let alone been to the top of the Statue.
(Hmmm....1986 was also the year my beloved Mets beat the Red Sox in the World Series...
gnomi, am I allowed to talk about it now?)
