This Day In History, 1969

On March 16, 1969, the musical "1776" opened on Broadway. "1776," with book by Peter Stone and lyrics and music by Sherman Edwards, told the story of the writing of the Declaration of Independence. The original production ran for 1,217 performances, and led to a movie version being released in 1972.
