[livejournal.com profile] madwriter had lunch with a Holocaust survivor, Nathan Kranowski, who spoke to a class at the college where he works. You can read the whole story and see the photos at his post Never Forget.

I was especially moved by [livejournal.com profile] madwriter's last two paragraphs, on the necessity of remembering the atrocities of the past and making sure that humanity does not forget.

Go read.

One thing that makes me despair is that humanity seems to "forget" instantly. We've seen numerous genocide since the holocaust, but somehow the lesson does not get learned. I really don't think Americans have much, if any, resistance to the madness of genocide.

I try to think of it as two steps forward, one step back. I'd like to think that as time passes, humanity is becoming more enlightened, even if it's not always evident.

I would agree with this...we stepped in over Bosnia, for instance, but have done little to stop the atrocities in Africa. A few decades ago we may not have even intervened in Bosnia.
