Men and women are not paid equally for their work history -- sorry, this is simply not true in many fields. One of the reasons is that men who push for higher starting salaries, more frequent raises, etc are viewed as "go-getters" whereas women who engage in the same behavior are viewed as pushy and abrasive. This is true primarily in the business world, but these attitudes bleed over into other fields like academia as well. Since salaries for public universities are publicly available, it's easy to demonstrate that female faculty members are generally paid less than male faculty members with comparable work experience.
