The elementary school math curriculum has certainly diminished all the kids' interest in math. The most stark example was one boy who started 5th grade eager to learn more math. Within a couple of months, he hated math class. Luckily, things have gotten better since then.
But to answer your question, no, the boys have pretty good self-perception. I don't know how to account for the difference.
