I just learned of that letter last year, when I visited the synagogue there in Newport. They mentioned it on the tour, and then my housemate (who long knew of the letter because of an interest in religious freedom law, which is part of what she does at work) ensured I read it. You are right: it is definitely one of the great American documents.
