So...the banana cake story.

[livejournal.com profile] scarlettina works at MSN, and every now and then has pointed me towards many new and exciting recipes. My response is usually to see the recipe, decide I want to eat it, and then ping [livejournal.com profile] gnomi to tell her to make the recipe for me. (Actually, we tend to make the recipe together.)

So a few weeks back, [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina pointed me towards a recipe for Butterfinger Banana Cake:

http://houseandhome.msn.com/food/recipes/RecipeDetail.aspx?rid=1485

I decided that this was a recipe I very much wanted. So [livejournal.com profile] gnomi and I went shopping for the ingredients, baked the cake, and discovered that it was a lot of cake for just two people. We managed to eat much of it, but we had leftover cake. So what should we do with the leftovers? Well, very conveniently enough, Noreascon 4 was just around the corner, and [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina was coming to the convention. So, on Thursday evening, when we met her in the bar for an hour of conversation, we brought with us the leftover cake in a Gladware container and gave it to her. She was amused and delighted.

The story doesn't end there, however. Last Wednesday, when I went to my local New England Comics for my weekly fix, Gwen, who works at the store, asked me about the cake. It seems that over the Worldcon weekend, she had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina, [livejournal.com profile] kradical, and [livejournal.com profile] bob_greenberger, and the story came up. I told her the story as outlined above, and Gwen asked for the recipe.

We did Gwen one better.

Not only did we email the recipe to her, but on Monday night, [livejournal.com profile] gnomi and I baked another one of the cakes, and today I brought it to the store when I went to purchase my comic books. Gwen seems to have been delighted by the cake, and we made sure to let [livejournal.com profile] bukket1138 know that he was entitled to have some as well.

Neat story! I am soooo looking forward to living in my new place, which has a wonderful (small but brilliantly laid out) kitchen wherein I hope to actually start cooking again. :)

I find it hard to dignify with the title "recipe" any set of food-prep instructions that boils down to "Take these four commercially available prepared foods and combine them in the following way".

... Not that there's anything wrong with that, since I'm a box-cake baker myself! That said, maybe I'll try this out for my birthday (on, uh, Erev Shemini Atzeret).

The recipe for the red white and blue chocolate cheesecake pie was a real one, but there's another recipe for a special cheesecake that boils down to decorating a store-bought cheesecake.

However, the fact is that making the Butterfinger Banana Cake did involve actual preparation and baking...

I don't use mixes much... as a serious sugar addict I find that the "real thing" tastes much better, and the difference in preparation (measure ingredients vs. buy them premixed) doesn't use that much more time or energy. Though we do use a fair amount of frozen pizza... somehow I don't care as much about things that don't involve chocolate...

And in case I don't remember on Wednesday, Happy Birthday a little early! :-)

That was really nice of you to bake another cake for her! I find that half the fun of baking is watching people enjoy it (as you know). :-)
