EDITED AT 10:19 TO ADD: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fynixsoul and her suggestion that I try logging into AIM from another machine, the problem seems to have been solved. Please continue to use mabfansf. However, I shall hold onto mabfansf2 just in case.

Short version: I'm using the screen name mabfansf2 now. Please make a note of it.

Longer version: When I logged onto AIM this morning, I discovered that my whole buddy list was gone. Furthermore, AIM wouldn't let me add anyone back to it. And from her AIM account, [livejournal.com profile] gnomi told me that it looked like I was not logged in at all.

It looks like my screen name "mabfansf" has become unusable. If anyone knows how to fix this, I would appreciate the help. ([livejournal.com profile] farwing, is this what happened to you a short time back?)

In the meantime, I've created a new screen name, which may end up becoming my permanent one. If you have me in your buddy list, I'd appreciate it if you would add mabfansf2 and ping me when you see me on line, so I can re-add you to my list. In addition, please note that iChat has a weird bug; it's possible that when I add you, I'll have to log out and then back in again to resume the conversation.

I get a similar error message: "Your buddy list and buddy icon are not available currently, but they have not been lost. Please try again later."

Thanks for letting me know; maybe I'm not the only one then. (Although I did not get an error message.)

I did file a bug report with them, but they make a point of telling you that this is not a way of getting tech support.

If mabfansf does recover, I'll go back to it.

I've moved over to AdiumX, an open-source chat client. It integrates very well with the OS X Address book, and I've had very few problems with it. (It doesn't yet support the AV protocols, but I don't use those anyway.) And it uses skins while staying stable; no mean feat.
