At 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, the British ocean liner Titanic sunk into the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada. The massive ship, which carried 2,200 passengers and crew, had struck an iceberg two and half hours before. The Titanic had been considered unsinkable. Only about 700 people survived.

Some people have theorized that what really caused the Titanic to sink was the extra weight of all the time travellers who showed up to observe the tragedy.

For more information on the Titanic, Wikipedia has a main page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic which includes links to other pages about movies and musicals. For the full entry on the ship itself, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Titanic. And it's the main listing at today's This Day in History, found, as always, at http://www.historychannel.com/tdih/tdih.jsp?category=leadstory.

As Terry Pratchett could tell you, the Titanic sank because of the large quantity of narrativium in its holds.

HA! Hahahahaha!

Personally, I think the Titanic sank because the captain couldn't bear to listen to Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio chant "Jack!" "Rose!" "Jack!" "Rose!" at each other ad nauseum. There's prize-winning dialogue for you. ::sigh::
