Oddly, one of the more interesting if less immediately comprehensible assessments a friend gave of my life was "You think sometimes you're the hero. Most people do. But you're actually one of the more prominent allegorical minor characters in a long Russian novel, who serves as a cautionary moral lesson and gets killed off around page 600."
