As anyone reading here knows, my "writing year," so to speak, is coming to an end. It's been a productive year. Since last September, I haven't had a job. Instead, I've been working as a full-time writer. During the past year, I managed to produce a few short stories, a novella, an article or two, and a novel-length manuscript. I'm in the final stages of editing that manuscript, but it is time for me to going back to work.

That doesn't mean I'm not going to keep writing, of course. However, Nomi and I had a plan, and the plan included my going back to work once the writing year was over.

I am delighted to announce that starting next Monday, I'll be an Associate Editor at a science textbook publisher here in the Boston area. I would be lying if I said that I won't miss the flexibility that writing full time brought to my schedule. But, on the other hand, I'm very excited about my new job. It fits my skill set perfectly, and it allows me take my teaching from the retail level to the wholesale level, as I like to put it.

You know, as I was at the "wondering" part of this post, I was thinking that working on (either writing or editing) science textbooks would be an excellent job for you. Then I read what your new job will be. Joys! Congratulations MAB!

Woo! Congrats! If this doesn't seem too personal, at some point (maybe next Meetup) would you be willing to talk about how you did it? Planning for the year off, getting grants if you did, using the time effectively, etc.?? I'm rabidly curious about how one makes a living as a writer in this era of housing prices averaging $400K; I'm working full-time and barely scraping by.

'Course, if it *does* seem too personal, sorry!

I actually did a presentation on this last Readercon, and I'm working on an article about it.

Sadly, I can't make the next Meetup. Brookline is having its first 300th anniversary celebration and I need to attend.

Silly boy, you still have the dates wrong! The MeetUp was on the 11th.

And I'd love to hear which publisher you're working for. I used to be at Addison-Wesley.

May the new job be fulfilling, and may it not affect your writing too much! Juggling a job along with fiction writing is something nearly all writers know all too well... :-)

While I can understand how much adjusting it will take to get back to a full-time work schedule (heck, I had to adjust after spending most of my time writing in the summer of '04 while I worked part-time), that does sound like a sweet deal. Congratulations, and good luck!
