Steven Barnes is reporting on his blog that science fiction writer and MacArthur Award recipient Octavia Butler has died. I don't know if this report is confirmed, but Barnes wouldn't lie about something like this.

It's true. From what I read on rec.arts.sf.fandom, it may have been a stroke.

There's been confirmation by the King County clerk's office.

Sorry, confirmation was from the King County Medical Examiner's Office, not the clerk.

I just read this on Gaiman's blog. I'm completely floored.

I don't know what to say. I never met her and I feel like I've lost family. In a way I have; she's had just as much influence on my writing career as my father. My dad taught me I could do it; Octavia Butler taught me I should do it.

Godspeed, sister. We'll look for you among the stars where you belong.

I met her a few times, and she was a wonderful person. I may post some of my reminiscences.

Aw man. I met her at a convention once; her charisma and presence were staggering. And her fiction was so powerful and fearless; truly amazing stuff. What a terrible loss.
