This Day In History, 1992: Death of Isaac Asimov

On April 6, 1992, in the early morning hours, Isaac Asimov passed away. At the time, it was reported that his death was due to kidney failure. Ten years later, his wife Janet Jeppson Asimov revealed that Isaac had contracted HIV during the blood transfusions he received while undergoing heart bypass surgery in 1983.

I had a lot of strong personal feelings about Asimov, and I knew him tangentially. I wrote an article about my experiences with him for the fanzine Mimosa back in 1997 (edited by rwl and nwl). Ironically, my Dad and I went to see a talk he gave in NYC about a year before he died. One of the things he spoke about was how sick Arthur C. Clarke was at the time, and that he probably wouldn't be around much longer...

Isaac Asimov was my first true introduction into serious sci-fi literature. I still miss him very much, he deserved the title of being a "grandfather of science-fiction."

It's been my habit, since 1994, to re-read I. Asimov at the beginning of each April. I'm almost through it again, for the 13th time, and I never get tired of it. (I usually follow it up with In Memory Yet Green and In Joy Still Felt. I think I might have those books memorized someday.)
