As founding president, I am delighted to announce the establishment of the Society for the Preservation of Pluto as a Planet (SP3). Our goal is simple: to have the world recognize that Pluto is, and of a right ought to be, considered the ninth planet of our solar system.

Have you seen the eloquent editorial in today's New York Times on the subject? Read it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/16/opinion/16brown.html

I did see it. It looks Brown is mostly saying that he wants his own discovery to be a planet too! :-)

Wouldn't you if you were he?

The good news is that Pluto's planethood has been saved. The bad(?) news is that it's no longer the 9th planet. The promotion of Ceres makes Pluto either the 10th or 11th planet, depending on where Charon is in its orbit at any given time.

I've said for years that if Ceres is not a planet, then there is no reason in the world why Pluto should be.
