Well, now that's it's been announced over at SF Signal, it's official.

SFWA has posted the 2006 Preliminary Nebula Awards Ballot, and I am delighted to announce that my novella "Sanctuary" (Analog, September 2005) has made it onto the ballot.

But there's more. Only four novellas made it onto the preliminary ballot, and the preliminary ballot is usually whittled down to the top five choices. Since there's only four novellas on the ballot, all four of them will make it to the final ballot...which means that I can state categorically that I am now a three-time Nebula nominee.

Congratulations are also due to James Patrick Kelly, [livejournal.com profile] paulmelko, and [livejournal.com profile] shunn, who are also on the same ballot. The four of us will presumably be joined by a fifth novella chosen by the jury for the final ballot. Good luck to us all.

Congratulations! Great news! Interestingly enough, half of the stories on the preliminary ballot (the only two that I've read so far), yours and [livejournal.com profile] shunn's are centered around religious themes. Now I have to go back and re-read both of them. And find the time to read "Burn" and "The Walls of the Universe"... Best of luck to you!

...are centered around religious themes.

It's interesting how that worked out, isn't it?

Thank you!

W00T! Very cool. I wish it was an award I could vote for, but I'll be crossing my fingers for you anyway.

Since the Nebulas are being held in New York City this year, you could come root for me in person...

Congratulations three times over. Sanctuary was an excellent story. I regret that I can only sit at the Associates table and watch all the Actives vote for it. (Oh, look! SFWA allowed us to have some sparkling cider this year. I feel so grown-up!)

Really, I'm very happy for you, and hope to see you step up to the podium at the banquet.

Well, hurry up, Sean, and sell two more stories!

Seriously, though, thank you. As it is, I'm up against some very good competition this year. I suspect it's anyone's guess who'll win.

Congrats!

I do think it's very odd -- and by odd I mean bad -- that the Nebulas include nominations for books that are already almost two years old. By the time the awards are announced, they will be well more than two years old. (E.g. Spin, which I hope wins anyway.) Spin got the Hugo months ago already. This makes the Nebula Awards feel stale, and late to have much of a commercial impact. I understand the logic of the current nomination system, I just don't think it's as positive an outcome for the works being honored as it could be.

I am not a crank.

There's a long history about how the Nebulas ended up the way they did, and what it means for the award. Every now and then, someone suggests a new system to replace "rolling admissions," but no one's pushed very strongly for a change yet.

Mazel Tov!!! It was good to see you yesterday.

BTW, my son thinks he did well on the test finishing in nearly half of the allotted time.
