Should I consider it odd that reading about all the troubles my friends are having on the New York City subway this morning makes me nostaligiac for my hometown?

No. It makes sense to me.

I read about stuff going on in Atlanta and I miss stuff there. Of course I tend to wander down to Atlanta at least twice a year.

Not in the least, in my opinion.

Yeah, but if you were here dealing with it, you would be feeling something completely different :-)

As someone who lived through it believe me, you should be happy you missed it.

But yeah -- during the big blackout a few years ago, I was on vacation in OBX when it happened, and there was a small part of me that was sorry I wasn't there to go through it with anyone. (Although I was mostly just happy to be sitting in an air conditioned beach house. *g*)

No need to be nostalgic (or even nostaligiac!): the day I moved to Somerville (Dec 31 2002) they had to close Park St and Downtown Crossing because of flooding due to a burst water main.
