This shabbat will be the day of Mom's yahrzeit. She died on January 25, 2007, which fell on 6 Shvat on the Hebrew calendar, and 6 Shvat this year falls on January 31.

In honor of my mom's yahrzeit, Nomi and I are sponsoring kiddush at our shul, Kadimah-Toras Moshe, on shabbas morning. That afternoon, I'm the speaker at shalosh seudos (the third meal), and for my topic I've decided to speak on "Superman and Moses." Mincha begins at 4:30 pm for anyone in the area who wants to hear my talk. However, for those who can't be there, I'll be basing much (but not all) of what I have to say on the book Up, Up, and Oy Vey!: How Jewish History, Culture, and Values Shaped the Comic Book Superhero by Rabbi Simcha Weinstein (and yes, I'll be giving him credit for it).

And yes, I know people still want me to write up my comments on "Spider-Man and Repentance." I will when I can.

This sounds interesting. If I get there at 4:30, will you be talking shortly after that time, or much later after most of the service?

Mincha starts at 4:30 pm and Maariv is scheduled for 5:40. Mincha usually lasts for about 15-20 minutes, I think, so I'll probably be speaking closer to 4:45 pm or 4:50 pm.

Thanks. Will anyone there mind too much if I duck in for your talk and then leave immediately afterwards?

Any chance you can summarize the gist of it for those of us who will be elsewhere?

Also, I meant to ask if you were on any panels at Arisia with Israel Peskowitz.

If I can find the time, I will.

Israel was on the panel Uncivil War with me, and he also joined the panel Politics and Comics but then got an important phone call and left the room for much of the discussion.

Your mother shares a yahrtzeit with my maternal grandmother. I was not quite 2 when she died, and don't remember her at all, but I'm told that I was very attached to her, and for months afterward wouldn't let anyone sit in her chair, or wear her coat, or use anything of hers. Since their souls are both due for an upgrade on the same day, perhaps they'll meet in whichever Heavenly office those are handed out...

6 Shevat is also my oldest nephew's birthday. He'll be 14 this Shabbat.

Good luck with the talk.
