For some reason, I can be very forgiving of odd plot coincidences or bizarreness, as long as the story rings true emotionally for me. In this case, the ending seemed so appropriate that I was forgiving. (In truth, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. But I did, and I'm honest about that.)
I'm with you on it being the perfect metaphor for what has gone before it, and the story was touching. I think if they had done it anywhere but the middle of a dusty field a mile or two from the final battle, it would have been the best Terminator movie since the original.
I still say 1 and 2 are the best, but this one wasn't far behind.
