So I haven't posted a lot about the creative process, because I haven't been working on "Denouement" for a while. All last week, I've had a full-day teaching gig, and it continues this week as well. So I haven't been working on the story.

Also, I've been looking for more of a hook for the story, because it was feeling far too much like that Trek episode I mentioned before. And today, I had another inspiring moment, and I must thank [livejournal.com profile] tanaise for it.

As I was reading through my F-list, I came to this post:

in which she gave the quote "...how preposterous it is to search for immortality when one cannot even resist sleep" as "one for the idea box." (I hope she won't mind my posting that here.)

Now, the quote didn't get me thinking about sleep, but I did start thinking about immortality...and at the risk of ruining the story for people, tonight I typed the following notes into my file:

WHAT IF THE SECRET IS THAT HUMAN BEINGS ARE REALLY NOW IMMORTAL? SO PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO DIE AT 60 OR ELSE THE WORLD WILL BECOME OVERPOPULATED? AND THE SECRET IMMORTALS PICK OUT PEOPLE THEY WANT TO KEEP AROUND FOR A LONG TIME TO HELP GUIDE THE WORLD?

I'm not saying that this is definitely where the story will go...but it definitely intrigues me more. And now I'm thinking this story will be less like Trek and more like Lois Lowry's "The Giver."

Again, thoughts welcome, but please try to avoid suggesting directions for the story...

I may not be immortal, but extrapolation from my experiences with Vivarin-spiked punch tells me the right drugs could make me live to 300.

And I'm wondering if hearing about all the stories not written will make me like the final one more or disappoint me because one of the others didn't make it.
