Why am I up after midnight? We got the kids to go to sleep on the early side, and then they woke up and would not go back to sleep. Eventually, we got one of them down, but the other just wouldn't go to sleep, despite being tired.

Nomi sat with her and starting reciting "The Walrus and the Carpenter," which gave me an idea. I found my Annotated "Hunting of the Snark" and started to read it to her.

By the time "the Baker had fainted away," so had she.

My mother read us German fairy tales. You know, the ones where emerging from the forest with all limbs intact was considered a happy ending.
(Seriously, some of them included fingers being cut off!) Did me no end of good.

With that in mind, may I suggest something from a local author, like Poe?

I think I'll hold off on the Poe until a little later on.

I will note that one of their favorite stuffed toys is a knit octopus that Nomi made, and I can't help but sometimes think of it as "Baby's First Cthulhu." (We named it Calamari, since they keep putting it in their mouths.)

My parents read the Alice books aloud to me when I was . . . a little bit older than yours now, but young enough that I could only sit still for a chapter at a time. It is one of my favorite childhood memories.

I used to sing "Hush Little Baby" to my babies, but since I couldn't remember any of the original lyrics past the diamond ring, I would make it up as I went along -- which had the affect of keeping *me* amused and calm enough that I could more easily transmit those calming vibes.
