Take a break from April Fool's on the Internet and read something serious instead!

Well, only slightly serious.

Yes, it's our latest The Brookline Parent column for Brookline Patch:

Reading Is Fundamental, Indeed

In this column, I discuss how foolish I felt when I started to read to the kids literally from the day they were born...and how reading to them has paid off, even though they're still so young.

Click the link, if for no other reasons than to see an adorable picture of me reading to the kids from one of their favorite books, SuperHero ABC, and to discover the truth behind the apocryphal story of how Marvin Minsky organizes his own books.

Reading is important. My parents both read to me, and some of my best childhood memories were of my stepfather reading to me. Then as I grew older, I ended up listening to him reading to my brother, whose room was right next to mine and we had thin walls. Reading is an excellent way to bond with your kids, and a good excuse for snuggles.

...the downside to this is my hatred of Dr. Seuss, because I ended up listening to Horton Hatches the Egg night after night for a year or so.

Dude, my mom read to me when I was still in utero, and to this day you could never convince her that this is not the reason I am a voracious reader, slack-assed writer, and all-around smart cookie. She will never let her obstetrician forget that he laughed at her for reading to her baby bump.

Readers rule the world!
