This week's The Brookline Parent column for Brookline Patch is a little different. Called "The Insistence of Memory," it's about how I feel when I know I can't record every single event that happens in the lives of Muffin and Squeaker, no matter how much I want to.

Read the column that Nomi referred to as "a psychological exploration of you and not so much about the children." :-) If nothing else, you'll want to see the photo of the ice cream cake that wishes happy birthday to "Muffin and Squeak."

Lovely piece, Michael. I understand wanting to document family history. You are fortunate, at least, in having someone to pass it on to.

Janna, for many years I wondered about that very question, as I didn't have anyone to pass family history along to except nieces and nephews. That, along with other things, led me to realize that all lives need to be archived and recorded somehow, among our friends and associations if not necessarily with family.

I completely relate. I swing between feeling I'm taking a ridiculous number of photos and fretting that I'll miss something if I don't have the camera.
