Stanley Schmidt, the editor who bought my first story and nurtured my science fiction writing career, won a Hugo Award for Best Editor tonight.

He's been nominated every year for over thirty years and never won. He had retired as editor of Analog last year, and so this was his last chance to win.

I am delighted he won. I wouldn't have had a writing career without Stanley Schmidt. I owe everything to him.

Well-deserved indeed.

I think he was still officially editor on some of the issues cover-dated 2013, so he is still eligible one more year.

But you're right -- Dr. Schmidt should have won this years ago. Even Susan Lucci took less time to win her Emmy.

Note that he also received a special Committee Award (which is relatively rare in that it's not given every year, nor is there anything requiring that one be given). Since he received it first, that actually had me wondering if he'd lost the Hugo and the con was giving him this in part to make up for that.
