Sometimes, when I am reading the newspaper, I imagine what it would be like if the newspaper I was reading got thrown back in time ten or twenty years. Imagine if you were in the year 2004, or 1994, and somehow had gotten ahold of the newspaper for this very date in 2014. How much context would you be missing? How much would you have to piece together? How much would seem all too familiar, and how much would seem bizarre and unbelievable?

I have tried this occasionally with the morning news on the radio. One time I remember nothing seemed too strange from the perspective of the 70s or 80s - war in the middle east, illnesses, economic turmoil - and then at the end there was a bit about political candidates making sure to take part in a gay pride parade.

I remember when I started reading newspapers and listening to NPR, I just had to accept for the first few weeks that I had no context and no idea of what was going on. And I didn't even need a TARDIS. :)
