West Wing, Star Trek, and Asteroids

kradical's recent post with the cover of his book ARTICLES OF THE FEDERATION, which he describes as his "Star Trek meets West Wing novel," made me reconsider last night's asteroid plot on West Wing. How would the Federation handle it? Probably like this:

Admiral: "Sir, there's a 400 m asteroid heading towards the Earth."
President: "So? Blast it."
Admiral (after using his communicator to contact the closest starship, which uses its phasers and photon torpedos): "It's gone, sir."
President: "Good. I don't know why you even bother telling me about planet-killing asteroids anymore."
