One year ago today, the government raised the national threat level to orange, indicating a high risk of terrorist attack, and said threat indicators are "perhaps greater now than at any point" since Sept. 11, 2001, with strikes possible during the holidays. Although Saddam Hussein had been captured the previous weekend, Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge said that there was no connection between the capture and the heightened alert.
This was the fifth time that the government had raised the alert level to Orange since establishing the system in 2002.
The alert level was lowered back to Yellow the following January 9th, where it currently remains.
